Don’t go to New Mexico
That leaves no time to get familiar, just a week or so
That leaves no time for the lake to balance these hot summer days
Don’t go
Don’t go to New Mexico
That leaves no time to hit the bricks, shake the hips, take it to the floor
That leaves no time to improve, to make these dance moves smooth
Don’t go to New Mexico
Canopy trees, it’s shade from our heads to our feet
Swallows skim the ground picking beetles from the air with their beaks
We take slugs from jugs, put the cork back tight
We make a path through the prairie grass, before the light dims
A hum creeps in, a cadence, a cicada rhythm
Bats trade swallows as the shadows for the new night sky
My tent is small, but the view is great
A slightly mesh-skewed view of the entire Southern skyscape
A little breeze, but the rent is cheap
Don’t go
Now Fall is here and the leaves pile up
You’re writing for the local rag in a river town
You’ve got teeth for the truth, can’t wait to see what you do
Don’t go to New Mexico

He said, “I’d like to walk to Boudhanath
It’s three miles through the city.”
Thijn was kind enough to join him
They would head out after their tea and their porridge
Despite the fact, they were given a map
The streets wind every way
“I seem to remember it was South West.
Let’s use the sun to be sure, it’s our best bet.”
Put the pen to the paper like a rock through the floor
Put that love in a letter and sweep the ash out the door
It’s the motorbikes through alleyways
It’s the backyards through the garden gates
It’s sleeping when you’re so far away
Rickshaw! Rickshaw!
All done up like Mardi Gras
Up on the handlebars
The driver, there
On his gears and his wheels
His eyes on the crowd
And his teeth on his nails
The rib-cage cow's got her nose in the trash
Her eyes looking sad
And human at that
The eyes in the chimney
See it all from above
Looking down on the city
With some bodhicitta
Put the pen to the paper like a rock through the floor
Put that love in a letter and sweep the ash out the door
It’s the motorbikes through alleyways
It’s the backyards through the garden gates
It’s sleeping when you’re so far away

What do you do with the love
That every man seems to end up givin you?
I put a dollar in that offering plate
Oh a few too many times
Like so many before me
I thought I had found my salvation
Once I could see
But now I'm blind
What do you do with the songs
Men like me wind up singin you
Community Muse,
Does that make you feel liked?
Just remember this melody
Echoed right out of a heart that's beating
My ribs are all bruised
From squeezin this guitar so tight
If no's the most powerful word that you've got
Then just say it
But until you do I'll keep beatin against the wind
I'd travel tonight
But some other guy
Is safe and convenient
As for me, we both know
I'm your favorite sin
Anyone else
Would be kicked to the curb
But I'll lay down in the gutter
And pray for your word
I ran out of pride
I'll just wait my turn
And when you deign to let me see you
You'll feel how I burn
You tell me I'm trouble
Well girl I'm a stone wheel in motion
Not easily started and even less easily slowed
You spun me up real good
In a back booth at Transmission
Your trouble began with a kiss that you stole
If no's the most powerful thing you can say
Please just say it
Cause until you do I'll keep riding through the night
A few hours with you
Sixteen on the road
At risk of arrest
Darlin, you're in me like a knifestone

Outside My Window

Outside my window and higher
Than I would like to go
He’s all tied up in phone wire
Extends like rays of hello's and “goodbye's
So longs, please helps
My house is on fires
It's raining
So he sits there and braves it
With asteroid-size hail ice crystals comin down like he’s in Hollywood
This isn’t Blow-Up or Cortazar
He shakes his head amid air conditioner units

Roll Up the Rugs

Roll up the rugs
This room may flood
Your boots are waterproof, but the sheets will soak through
When it rains, it floods
Now rearrange the contents of the basement in order to anticipate the rain water moving in
Drip by drip by drip by drip by...
As the volumes change hands
And the water forms into meandering paths
He thinks, “It’s been a long time since it’s flooded like this
It’s been a long time - about minutes to drips.”
Machine elves cuttin’ across
Is he really thinking / making things with his thoughts?
Bubbles out the mouth dropping with the weight of cue balls?
This message is transmitted
From the basement of the world
There’s plenty of light through the Southern window
It beams inside from the pale moon outside
He can’t get the red dress wet
It was far too expensive
That thing is a time bomb ticking down here in this basement
Now latch up the windows
And sweep up the wet worms that drop through the windows
Put mamma long legs in a shoebox with her babies
The clouds drift in collision, scrape and shed drops like the wind-blown branches of a pine
When the sky grows dark, call the dog inside
His mind races on
While walking, he realizes there are still trees
Big and blooming from the ground
Makes him feel like a miniature
Between the moon and lightning flashes, he can see
For a minute the map of language on the backyard
Where the tent was sitting
It’s upstairs, too, at the kitchen table
And now there’s fingers tapping on the roof
A thousand beats intersecting –
One solid line of “mmmmmmmmmm”.
Machine elves cuttin’ across
Is he really thinking / making things with his thoughts?
Bubbles out the mouth dropping with the weight of cue balls?
This message is transmitted
From the woods and the city
There’s plenty of light from behind the eyes
There’s plenty of white lightlight

Sweep my spirit out across the street
I just need to walk
I clear the fog when I move my feet
I just need to walk
Are you out there walking alone in Atlanta
Or are you holed up in that silent hill hotel
My hands are too free to be out here without yours
As we go walking through the neighborhood at night
Sweep my spirit out across the street
I just need to walk
I clear the fog when I move my feet
I just need to walk
Are you out there in the heart and heat of Georgia
You know to me you are the moonlight and the pines
My hands are too free to be out here without yours
As we go walking through the neighborhood at night
Jesse look up at the sky
When the light from the moon catches your eyes and mine
You’ll know I'm with you tonight
And yeah you're not here by my side
If my heart grows more fond I may just lose my mind
Jesse look up at the sky
There’s no good reason to why I should feel such discontent
I was blessed to be born to a good home
I still have some youth and health left yet
Sweep my spirit out across the street
I just need to walk
I clear the fog when I move my feet
I just need to walk
Are you out there in the heart and heat of Georgia
You know to me you are the moonlight and the pines
My hands are too free to be out here without yours
As we go walking through the neighborhood at night
Jesse look up at the sky
When the light from the moon catches your eyes and mine
You’ll know I'm with you tonight
And yeah you're not here by my side
If my heart grows more fond I may just lose my mind
Jesse look up at the sky
